Watermead Mass Cards

Our Mass Cards were the fourth project undertaken.  At present there are sixteen in the set and each card holds our own wording - from our hymns and from the poems gifted to us.

The original design was a card made for Father John, who so liked the vine design, phrasing and card colouring, that he asked if it could be produced as a mass card.  For years, he had always made his own mass cards - a simple message printed onto a folded card with a prayer card pasted onto the front.

Elizabeth, who had faithfully pasted the prayer cards onto each of Father John's home-made cards, now did the same on the new design.  When we later had to start using identification codes in our catalogue, it was decided to make these the initials of the person or persons who had a particular role in the item's production.

So, when you read EH in the code of each mass card know that it stands for Elizabeth Harris and, although she has since died, her involvement will be forever remembered through this coding.

(Today, Doreen pastes on the cards - and, of course, with the same care and precision that Elizabeth once used.)

GOING HOME - Monty and Sheila

The wording inside the shown sample card is from our hymn "Going Home".

The music was composed on the day that Monty died.  He and Sheila had gone home to his native Ireland for a holiday where, sadly, he had fallen and died.  Sheila was to bring his body back to his home parish in England for burial, and the wording was written to reflect the love and longing we all share of "home".

The finished hymn was given to Sheila on her return and, a few days later, a full church all sang Monty's hymn at his Requiem Mass.

“Going Home” was recorded in 1995 - appearing first on the “LIFE A Journey Shared” cassette/CD and later on our “People of God” meditation CD.
